Candidate (The Black Mage #3) by Rachel E. Carter Book Chat

Welcome to the Candidacy. Where dreams go to die.
Twenty-year-old Ryiah is a black mage of Combat, but she’s not the Black Mage. Yet. She’s had her eyes on the legendary robe for as long as she can remember, and in just one year, she will have a chance at her country’s prestigious—and only—tourney for war mages… Too bad she is going up against a certain prince—the one person she has yet to beat.
The Candidacy finally arrives and a winner is robed, but something dark is lurking in her kingdom’s midst. Rival nations are closing in, and it’s time to make an alliance.
Unfortunately for Ryiah, that’s only the beginning. The worst enemy resides in the palace.

Book Rating: fivestars-02

Candidate was so intense more so than the first two. Now that Ry and Darren are engaged and mages of combat time is not always on their side. Darren must stay at the capital with his father meanwhile Ry is at a different port. This creates some issues with the two. Now that RY is a royal life for her is even more difficult especially with her family which annoyed me to no end. So many times it felt like they wanted her dead because of some issues that happened and it annoyed me. But then there are some rebels and they hit a little close to home. The ending is honestly so crazy and made me so hype for the final book.

“Cheer is for fools with idle minds. I am neither a fool nor idle.”
“You better get training, Ryiah. We can’t have our savage go soft.”
Then he was running and I was running, and we didn’t stop until my arms were wrapped around his neck and his were locked around my waist, his face pressed in my hair. “Five months is too long,” he rasped. My eyes watered, and I told myself I’d never let go. “You smell like home.”
“Do you know the difference between a nation of merchants and a nation of warriors?” I followed through without waiting for a reply. “Only one of them is prepared to fall on its blade.”
