The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus #2) by Rick Riordan
Publication: October 4th, 2011
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: fivestars-02

synopsis-07

Percy is confused. When he awoke from his long sleep, he didn’t know much more than his name. His brain fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight with the pen/sword in his pocket. Somehow Percy manages to make it to a camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he has to keep killing monsters along the way. But the camp doesn’t ring any bells with him. The only thing he can recall from his past is another name: Annabeth
Hazel is supposed to be dead. When she lived before, she didn’t do a very good job of it. Sure, she was an obedient daughter, even when her mother was possessed by greed. But that was the problem—when the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her “gift” for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn’t say no. Now because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk. Hazel wishes she could ride away from it all on the stallion that appears in her dreams.
Frank is a klutz. His grandmother says he is descended from heroes and can be anything he wants to be, but he doesn’t see it. He doesn’t even know who his father is. He keeps hoping Apollo will claim him, because the only thing he is good at is archery—although not good enough to win camp war games. His bulky physique makes him feel like an ox, especially in front of Hazel, his closest friend at camp. He trusts her completely—enough to share the secret he holds close to his heart.
Beginning at the “other” camp for half-bloods and extending as far as the land beyond the gods, this breathtaking second installment of the Heroes of Olympus series introduces new demigods, revives fearsome monsters, and features other remarkable creatures, all destined to play a part in the Prophesy of Seven.

Plot

The Son of Neptune now takes place in the other camp for demi-gods. Percy has been out of commission for quite some time. He doesn’t know who he is or where he comes from. He only has Annabeth’s name in his mind. He is not sure who she is but he knows she is important. After the wolf goddesses, Lupa told him what he is and where to go he is still unsure. Making his way to camp Jupiter has been a long and tiring journey. Right outside the gates, he helps Juno cross and two demigods help him make it inside. Now on Roman turf and with two gods (Juno & Mars) both singling him out everyone agrees that something big is happening. With Hazel and Frank, Percy must journey to Alaska the world beyond the gods to defeat a giant and stall Gaea’s waking. His memories slowly come back as they continue the journey.

Characters

Percy Jackson is so amazing in this new series. I love him even more than I did before. He works hard to make it back to his friends even though he does not know who is who yet. My favorite thing about Percy is that he is incredibly humble no matter how powerful he is. It is extremely noticeable in this book. Percy really can make friends with anyone. I love how much he grows to care for Frank and Hazel and does all he can to help protect them.

Hazel Levesque is back from the dead. She is the daughter of Pluto and has a gift that is really a curse. Treasures appear out of nowhere and those who touch them can be harmed at some point if they touch them. Her half brother Nico, is the one who got her out of the underworld. She is a strong girl and wants to right the wrongs of her past. Her mother made a deal with Gaea that put them both in danger and started her waking.

Frank Zhang’s life is tied to a wooden stick. He has family histories tied to a lot of power through his roots. He didn’t like being the son of Mars but it came in handy. He learns of his family gift which is that he is a shapeshifter. Frank is a big guy but also not so bold as one might think. He is like a big teddy bear. He is so sweet and so kind to Hazel. He has a lot of growth as he learns his worth and it is beautiful.

Favorite Quotes
Until that morning, her brother Nico had been the most powerful demigod she knew…Then she’d met Percy…Even though he was beat up, dirty, and stooped with exhaustion, he’d had an aura of power.
“Is he dangerous?” she asked. Nico managed a dry smile. “Very. To his enemies…”
“So you do have a plan?” Octavian asked skeptically. Percy looked at his teammates. “We go to Alaska as fast as possible…” “And we improvise,” Hazel said. “A lot,” Frank added.
“Unfair? You can breathe underwater and blow up glaciers and summon freaking hurricanes—and it’s unfair that I can be an elephant?”
“I’m glad you asked.” Percy stood, taking the question as an opening. Octavian stammered, “I wasn’t—” “—part of the quest,” Percy said. “Yes, I know. And you’re wise to let me explain, since I was.”
