synopsis-07

Jason has a problem.
He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently, he has a girlfriend named Piper, and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for “bad kids.” What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly?
Piper has a secret.
Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare about his being in trouble. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits during the school trip, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out.
Leo has a way with tools.
When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about, and some camper who’s gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god. Does this have anything to do with Jason’s amnesia or the fact that Leo keeps seeing ghosts?

Plot

The first in a new series featuring the Great Prophecy that will have seven demigods from both Greek and Roman camps teaming up to defeat Gaea. Jason Grace wakes up on a bus going on a field trip holding a girl’s hand and he has no recollection of her, this trip, or who he is. Piper McClean and Leo Valdez have no idea what is up with Jason and why he is acting like he does not know them. Somehow their chaperon turns into a goat man and one of their peers turns into some monster that attacks them. They soon discover that they are all half-bloods but Jason really is someone they don’t know. Their time together was an illusion of the mist. After they all become claimed by their godly parents the trio must go on a quest that will set in motion the start of the great prophecy. As they go, more of Jason’s past uncovers and they all learn what Hera did to the two main leaders of the Greek and Roman camps.

Prophecy and meaning

Child of lightning, beware the earth. (Jason, Gaea is waking)
The giants revenge the seven shall birth, (The 7 demigods from the great prophecy & the giant king)
The forge and dove shall break the cage, (Leo-Hephaestus & Piper-Aphrodite)
And death shall unleash through Hera’s rage. (Hera killed everything at the Wolf House)

Characters

Jason is the son of Jupiter. He is pretty powerful but because he has no memory he is not sure who he is. This is a reread for me so I already knew he was a part of the Roman camp. I really liked Jason a lot. He reminded me of Percy but Riordan didn’t just make a carbon copy. Jason is more militant and by the book. He is funny but more serious in my opinion. He is a natural leader and I enjoyed how we saw the way that he struggled with wanting to protect his friends no matter what.

Piper is the daughter of Aphrodite but unlike the other kids of the goddesses, she is not concerned with looks. She doesn’t feel all the powerful or important to the quest but we soon discover that the children of love can be powerful too. Piper can charmspeak which is how she got into a lot of trouble before discovering she was a demigod. I liked her so much because she learns that she is valid and important.

Leo is the son of Hephaestus and my favorite of the trio. He is so funny and such a goofball. He has incredible power with fire and although he jokes a lot we get to see serious moments with him too. I appreciate characters like him a lot because they end up having a lot of depth. He feels the most useless of the bunch when in actuality he is incredibly important. He is literally Mr. fix it with his tools and I love it so much.

Writing

I am taking out this section for this series in my reviews because I think you all know how much I love Riordan lol.

Favorite Quotes
In some ways, you are the most important of the seven—like the control disk in the dragon’s brain. Without you, the power of the others means nothing.
“…But then that young upstart, Percy Jackson—” “The guy who’s missing.” “Hmph. Yes. Him. He had the nerve to turn down our offer of immortality and tell us to pay better attention to our children. Er, no offense.” “Oh, how could I take offense? Please, go on ignoring me.”
“…Love is powerful, Piper. It can bring even the gods to their knees…”
“Monsters,” her dad said, a tear tracing his cheeks. “I live in a world of monsters.”
