Hey, awesome weirdos. Today I am doing something different. My friend Ashley over at Thrifty Bibliophile created the meme Throwback Thursday- Memorable Book That Starts With the Letter…I love this meme and although I am not posting it on Thursday I still wanted to give it a whirl. Obviously, I am starting with A.
For my first throwback, I’m picking Asylum and the full Asylum series. It a trilogy (Asylum, Sanctum, and Catacomb), a prequel novel (Escape from Asylum; my review is here), and The Asylum Novellas with three short stories (The Scarlets, The Bone Artists, and The Warden.)
I have read this series over the course of a few years since it came out. It is the right amount of thrilling and scary. In the trilogy we follow sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford who get into a New Hampshire College Prep program. But when he arrives, the place students would usually house has been closed so they have to stay in the crumbling Brookline Dorm which was once a psychiatric hospital. He makes friends with Abby and Jordan and they being to explore Brookline and its hidden basement. While on these expeditions they uncover distressing secrets about what went down when it was a running psych ward. Some of those secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum’s dark and twisted past. Brookline was no everyday run of the mill psych ward and Dan and his friends get swept up into something much more dangerous than they ever imagine their summer to look like. Some secrets refuse to stay buried.
In the prequel novel Ricky Desmond is wrongfully committed to the Brookline psychiatric hospital and needs to find a way out before he is the next victim of the evil and twisted warden’s experiments. The other patients in Brookline are nothing like him he lost his temper just once time and bam he winds up in the infamous psych ward. But, the sinister Warden Crawford selects Ricky for a program that claims will not cure him but perfect him. He realizes soon that he can’t wait for his mom or someone to believe him that he doesn’t belong there and will have to figure a way out on his own. He teams up with some unlikely people like a nurse and a fellow patient and must work fast before his life is no longer his to claim.
The Asylum Novellas
Synopsis From Goodreads:
Three chilling novellas set in the world of the novel Asylum. For the first time, these three terrifying stories will appear together with new found photographs perfect for new readers or diehard series fans looking for new clues and insights into the thrilling world of Asylum. In The Scarlets, Cal is drawn into New Hampshire College’s twisted secret society—one with a deadly initiation. In The Bone Artists, Oliver tries to make a little extra money for college by working for a seedy organization that traffics in human bones. In The Warden, a young nurse starts a new job at the Brookline asylum but soon becomes suspicious of its unorthodox procedures.
I can’t wait to read this and get into the mind of these characters that I read about in the other books and to dive deeper into this chilling world.
Final Thoughts on Series
This whole series is mind-bending and scary. You get the chills on your spine from the reading and the images that Madeleine Roux accompanies throughout the book. The setting and tone are dark and sinister. You find yourself holding your breath and biting your nails. You never know what is going to come next or if everyone will make it out alive. It’s like a scary thriller movie put onto pages and I couldn’t get enough. This series is a major page-turner and your biggest nightmare. If you are into this sort of thing please get this book. You will not regret it.
