I have hit a bit of a reading slump. It is probably because I am in the midst of the nasty period in Minnesota where winter has lost its charm. When you see snow out the window, instead of enjoying the beauty, you groan and wonder when this is all going to be over.
Groundhog, my ass.
Meanwhile, here is some of the books I have been reading lately.
Rose Cooke’s life has been falling apart. It all started when her sister Fern disappeared. Then years later her brother takes off. And no one in her family wants to talk about it, because . . . . well I don’t want to ruin it for you. There is some interesting insight in family dynamics in this one. FYI, the story does jump around. A lot.
Zelda’s story is full of glitz, romance, and flappers. It is also a story of lies, jealousy and alcoholism. It is kind of like a train wreck, you can’t tear yourself away. Out of all of the stories I have read about the Lost Generation one thing remains the same: Hemingway is a jerk.
Luisa, the blogger behind The Wednesday Chef, spent much of her life in planes, crossing the globe to visit family; Her mom in Berlin (and sometimes Italy), and her dad in Boston. This memoir follows her on a journey across many countries all while looking for her place in the world. Each chapter ends in a recipe, and gives us insight in German culture.
I have a hard time describing this book. It is full of short vignettes, kind of like musings, about life and marriage. Mostly it is about a marriage slowly imploding with all of the colicy babies, bedbugs and un-realized job prospects, with tidbits of Kafka and the history of space travel thrown in. While I did not like the narrative of the story, the writing was so beautiful, it made it worth while.
