We are half way through the month so that means it is time again for Quick Lit. Which, for those of you not in the know, it where I share quick bit about some of the books I have been reading lately.
February is a restless month for me. I am itching to be outdoors but this is usually when the Minnesota winters are at their dreariest. I usually spent my time watching Netflix and reading comics. And looking though seed catalogs.
Here are a couple of novels I read over the last month.
There are lots of corny coming-of-age stories in YA. This is not one of them. Vera’s best friend (and crush) died and she is reeling from his death. And keeping his secrets, including what really happened the night he died. She tells you what is going on in a frank voice, the voice of a real teenager. If you have an angst-y teenager in your life, hand them this book.
Jim and Bob Burgess escaped their small Maine hometown as soon as they possible could. When their sister calls tell them her son is in BIG trouble they head back to Maine to help and deal with all of their shit. And, oh boy, do they have it. Beautiful writing but all the characters are pretty un-redeemable.
Tia is on the fast track to living her dream of being a food writer when she meets one of the most powerful people in the industry: the NYT food critic. And he needs her help. He wants to use her tastebuds and words in his reviews and will pay her in clothes and connections. What could possibly go wrong? Fun, albeit a little over dramatic at times.
Marina was a fresh-faced and very promising writer looking forward to graduation and her new job at The New Yorker when she was killed in a car accident. This is a collection of her beautiful essays and short fiction. If you haven’t read this yet, you should definitely pick this one up.
I am linking up over at Modern Mrs Darcy, head on over and see what everyone else has been reading.
