Spring is has finally sprung in my little corner of Minnesota. Warmer temps turn my mind toward the garden and most importantly, Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon. The official start date is the 23rd and now I am concentrating on finishing up a few of my half-finished books so I can start fresh.
Some of them has been books that have been on my TBR for ages. Including these four. Which is also good for my goal of reading my own damn books.
I am not sure what it is about Chefs that makes their lives so fascinating (and hardscrabble). Starting when her parents left her pretty much unsupervised as a tween to her running a drink scam while waitress in a NYC club, to her starting restaurant from the wreckage of a failed one Gabrielle’s life was both fascinating and hardscrabble. I found the bits about her (very) unusual marriage particularly interesting.
Harper is living in Depression-era Chicago when he comes across a house that lets him travel through time. They only thing the house asks for in return is the death of The Shining Girls. Except one of the girls doesn’t die and he starts to track him across the years. The plot jumps back and forth across time and characters (sometimes confusingly) before it all comes to a head.
Other book-lovers have been singing this books praises but what made me start was the fact the Gilmore Girl’s beloved father/grandpa Edward Hermann reads the audio. I think I could listen to Papa Gilmore read me the phone book. We follow Joe Rantz from his early years when he abandoned by his family to him heading off with his crew team to challenge the Nazi for the gold.
I just heard about this book in the last couple of years even though it has been around for YEARS, and it is the favorite childhood book for many book people, so I had to read it – right?! Sixteen people gather to listen to the reading of Samuel Westing’s will and no one really knows why they are there. What they do find is a mystery with millions of dollars and ownership of a large company for the winner.
So, what have you been reading lately?
I am linking up over at Modern Mrs Darcy, so head on over and check out what everyone else is reading.
