I will be the first to admit that the premise for this book is bonkers.
Basically after centuries of planning the Queen (Ant) has raised a perfect army, an army of ten foot tall ants that follow her orders without question. They start to move across continents, destroying cities and killing as they go.
But that is not all my friends!
Part two of the Queen’s master plan is releasing a chemical in the air that expands animals brains and lets them stand on two feet. Not only are people battling giant ants dogs, cats, rats, pigs, you name it, are all standing tall and thinking for themselves. Many of them are, PISSED.
Mort(e), while he was still a regular cat, had an unlikely friendship with the neighbor dog, Sheba. When the world as we know it explodes, Sheba takes off, and Mort(e) takes off after her. On the way he meets up, and works with, a group of mercenary cats that get their missions straight from the Queen.
After they clear out most of the humans, Mort(e) retires and heads back to the house where he lived with his human family. That is, my friends, is when things get really interesting.
What comes next is delves into philosophy, religion and(surprisingly) human nature. Maybe it is just considered nature in this case.
While the plot sounds ridiculous, it isn’t really. (Which on reading it again, sounds ridiculous.) Most of the time you forget that the characters are actually animals.
The plot is engaging and pretty un-put-down-able, so don’t let the talking cats scare you away.
The “war with no name” has begun, with human extinction as its goal. The instigator of this war is the Colony, a race of intelligent ants who, for thousands of years, have been silently building an army that would forever eradicate the destructive, oppressive humans. Under the Colony’s watchful eye, this utopia will be free of the humans’ penchant for violence, exploitation and religious superstition. The final step in the Colony’s war effort is transforming the surface animals into high-functioning two-legged beings who rise up to kill their masters.
Former housecat turned war hero, Mort(e) is famous for taking on the most dangerous missions and fighting the dreaded human bio-weapon EMSAH. But the true motivation behind his recklessness is his ongoing search for a pre-transformation friend—a dog named Sheba. When he receives a mysterious message from the dwindling human resistance claiming Sheba is alive, he begins a journey that will take him from the remaining human strongholds to the heart of the Colony, where he will discover the source of EMSAH and the ultimate fate of all of earth’s creatures.
